What is Heartworm?

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes.  The mosquito bites an infected animal and transfers the immature heartworm (microfilariae) into an uninfected animal to cause the disease.  The adult worms live in the heart and lungs, where they can cause permanent damage and even death!

In Wisconsin, mosquitoes have been jokingly considered our state bird.  However, their high numbers here put all dogs at risk.  Even dogs who spend most of their lives indoors can be bitten when the pesky mosquito finds its way into your home.  Dr. Bryant’s goal is to find low worm-burden cases early and begin treatment as soon as possible, when it provides the most benefit and lower risk to your pet.
